ISARD has previously focused on introducing and promoting high-value crops like black cardamom, shiitake mushrooms, and Sichuan pepper in Sindhupalchowk. These commodities have become important income sources for local communities, significantly contributing to better livelihoods and economic stability.
Since 2018, ISARD has expanded its efforts to include coffee farming, recognizing its potential as a sustainable livelihood option—especially in the context of rebuilding rural economies. In response to ongoing challenges in the region, we have strengthened our focus on the coffee value chain. This includes establishing nurseries, setting up pulping centers, and providing extensive training on all aspects of coffee production and processing.
In 2024 alone, over 5 tonnes of coffee cherries were processed through the pulping centers we support. The positive impact on smallholder farmers has led to a surge in interest, with many joining cooperatives, forming farmer groups, or starting independently.
Looking ahead, ISARD aims to help establish Barhabise as a recognized coffee-producing area, known by name in Nepal’s specialty coffee market by 2028.
